The Kenya Electricity Power Company (KETRACO) and Ethiopia Electric Power Company (EEP) are in the process of interconnecting their two power systems through the construction of a 1045 km 500 kV High Voltage Direct Current (HVDC) transmission line and 2000 MW HVDC converter substations at both ends of the line. The line runs from Woloyta/ Sodo in Ethiopia to Suswa Substation in Kenya. The Kenya part of the transmission line is approximately 620km and is divided into lots.
The Program supports the integration of power systems of five countries with a combined population of over 200 million. Within the framework of the EAPP, the Program has three phases for connecting the power grids of Ethiopia, Kenya, Tanzania, Uganda, and Rwanda. The EAPP’s Master Plan, endorsed by the governments of the EAPP member countries, has designated the transmission interconnections among these countries as priorities for the development of the Eastern Africa power market. These interconnections will create the transmission backbone for the region.
